Guidelines for Rescues

 Interested in joining the HP Network? Here is what we are looking for in rescues across the country:
 

 1.   Should be a non-profit based organization

 2.   Have or will be getting 501(c) certification or state non profit

       certification

3.      Be licensed in the state that they operate in to do

        business

4.      Perform on a no-kill basis (euthanasia is acceptable for illnesses that

        have no hope of recovery or to function with quality of life)

5.      Have educational support to the general public, future adopters, and

        current bird owners.

6.      Have stipulations in place in contracts that birds can be removed if not

        being taken care of.

7.      Be willing to attend conferences when available in your area

8.      Must compensate HC for gas. Amounts will be calculated by using the

        mileage given both ways and the average price of gas. The money for

        this should be added into the adoption fee. Monies paid to HC should

        come from the company account in check format.

 9.   Must pay membership fees when due.

10.  Must promote responsible pet ownership, including proper diet,

        exercise, and vet care.

11.  Do not place birds in breeding homes (past, current, future) exceptions

        can be made dependant upon individual circumstances.

12.  Be willing to answer questions and help guide the HC in placing a bird

        when needed.

13.  Do not promote inappropriate materials/supplies/services through their

        business.

14.  Have a standard intro class on bird care or resources available.

15.  Have a detailed outline on conflict resolution.

16.  Be willing to assist when needed or asked in disaster relief. This may

        include: fostering, transporting, and adoption placement if necessary.

17.  Have documentation/proof of current avian vet. Provide with contact

        information.

18.  The following procedure must be done before placing birds or allowing

        them contact with the rest of the flock:

 

1.      Small birds (Parakeets, Cockatiels, Lovebirds, Bourke’s, Parrotlets, Canaries, Finches, Quakers, Pigeons, Doves) must have a fecal test done checking for infections including Giardia.

2.     Medium birds (Conures, Senegals, Indian Ringnecks, Cockatoos, Caiques, Lories, Kakarikis) must have fecal test done and blood work

3.     Large birds (Mini-Macaws, Amazons, Eclectus, Cockatoos, Greys, Pionus, Hawk- heads) must have fecal test and blood work.

4.     Extra Large: (Macaws, Cockatoos, Toucans) must have fecal test and blood work.

 

This list by no means is complete, and if you come across a bird that is not on the list please contact us. This list only includes exotic birds not wildlife.

 

19.    Supply the HC with history on the bird being placed along with basic

        species profile (if not experienced)

20.  Be willing to do home visits/checks in your area when needed.

Large Rescue (more than 10 HPN* placements a year)   $50.00 annual membership
Placement Fee   $10.00 per HPN* placement

  Placement fee and gas fee should be included in adoption price and be  non-refundable to the applicant to ensure

    no out of pocket cost to the rescue.
